21-22 China

Summary

Experience Earth from Above. 21-22 is a research-driven immersive project that examines the Anthropocene through aerial imagery, spatial installations, and real-world 360 VR capture. In its first exploration of the Anthropocene, 21-22 focuses on China, examining environments shaped by immense geological time and accelerated human development. From the sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie, shaped over millions of years by erosion and natural geological processes, to the Longsheng rice terraces, the work traces landscapes progressively transformed by human intervention. Former Silk Road deserts reveal layers of historical exchange intersected by modern infrastructure, while vast coal mines and rare earth extraction sites expose the material foundations of contemporary energy and technology. Expanding cities such as Zhengzhou and the Blade Runner–esque megacity of Chongqing further illustrate the scale and intensity of urban and technological transformation.
